EMC: This Stock Can Help You Profit from Enterprise Cloud Growth

EMC (EMC) is one of the leading companies in data storage solutions. It also extends its hands at various other solutions such as data warehousing, business intelligent, and virtualization. It was surprised to see that some of its products like EMC Atmos, Vblock, Mozy and Syncplicity have gained enough traction in the market while the business moving to cloud of late.

Solid Performance

EMC has displayed a decent performance in the second-quarter as it revenue surged 6% to $5.61 billion year-on-year basis. Also it was good to notice that EMC's domestic revenue rose 4% to $3 billion that contributes approximately 53% of the total revenue. EMC also attained 8% growth in international revenue that came in at $2.7 billion, driven by its information infrastructure business, pivotal and VMware (VMW).

VMware is a pioneer in virtualization software and a subsidiary of EMC. EMC holds around 80% stake of VMware. VMware registered revenue growth of 11% in its latest quarter from the year ago period and posted an income of $244 million, a 28% jump. This strong growth has indeed contributed generously to the top and bottom line of EMC.

Growth Prospects

Later, a new company, Pivotal, was established as an amalgamation of various divisions and products from EMC and VMware. Pivotal's product portfolio will have Pivotal Labs, Cloud Foundry, Greenplum, Gem Fire, Cetas, Greenplum and Vfabix Suit (product of VMware). This strategic move was initiated so that EMC can concentrate on emerging market opportunities such as cloud application, security applications system and large scale data management system, which are its core business areas.

Also the investment of $105 million in Pivotal by General Electric (GE) made the stock more attractive to pick as this strategic investment will certainly boost its growth in the future and increase shareholder's value as EMC is recording steady growth in global market. Its revenue grew 12% in Asia Pacific and Latin America, while North America revenue was up by 4% and significant 6% rise was observed in the EMEA regions. Also EMC's revenue grew 18% in the BRIC nations.

Fundamentals

EMC projects total revenue of $23.5 billion for fiscal 2013 and is expecting a rise of 25.5% rise in non-GAAP operating margin. Also, Non-GAAP net income of $4 billion is expected for fiscal 2013. It expects cash flow of $6.8 billion from operating activities, and the free cash flow target is $5.5 billion.

EMC is determined to repurchase a total of $6 billion worth of shares by 2015 and this should have a positive effect on the EPS. Also Looking at the growth trajectory of EMC, the company should be able to at least match its estimates going forward. Moreover, its strategic investment in businesses such as XtremIO, ViPR and Pivotal should also help EMC in attaining its targets and increase its profitability in the coming years.

Competition

Its potential peer like NetApp (NTAP) that specializes in IT-enabled business solutions such as data security, cloud solutions, and data management systems posted weak performance in the recently declared quarter. Also its growth prospects do not look very enticing as it registered net revenue of $1.71 billion, a marginal increase of 0.8% from the previous quarter.

Also its operating expense increased 7.7% to $827.8 million from the year-ago quarter, which had an impact on its earnings that dipped 7.7% to $204.4 million. In addition to this, NetApp's operating margin also declined to 11.9% as compared to 13% in the year ago quarter.

Also, NetApp is very expensive at current levels. The company trades at a price-to-earnings multiple of almost 29x, while in comparison, EMC trades at a trailing P/E of 20. With quarterly revenue growth slowing down and earnings dropping, the valuation looks rich and investors are advised to stay away from NetApp.

Brocade Communications (BRCD) is another company that provides solutions similar to EMC, but it is a smaller player. Brocade earns 50% of its total revenue from its core service of storage area networks (SAN). However, it faced a 7% decline in revenue in the second quarter from the prior year period. This can be concerning for investors. With major players like Cisco (CSCO), Brocade faces fierce competition for its core business and the company might be in for tough times.

It looks like the company's management is aware of this and that's why they have been selling shares. Wall Tyler, a vice president at Brocade, recently sold around 97,000 shares. Given the recent revenue decline and probability of stiff competition, it is not surprising that an insider sold shares.

Conclusion

EMC's stake in VMware and the constant adoption of the cloud are expected to drive its growth in the future. Moreover, as seen above, the company is cheaper than peers such as NetApp and has a lucrative share repurchase plan in place. So, investors should consider putting their money in this stock if they are looking for a play on the cloud.

What's behind the corporate food frenzy?

The ongoing food frenzy comes down to this: buy or be bought.

"Think of it as a Pac Man for companies," says Michael Silverstein, senior partner at the Boston Consulting Group. If you don't swallow someone else, they may swallow you.

Perhaps that's why even giant Tyson Foods got into the melee Thursday when it offered $50 a share — about $6.8 billion — in an all-cash deal to purchase Hillshire Brands, which makes Jimmy Dean sausage and Ball Park hot dogs. Earlier this week, Pilgrim's Pride offered about $6.4 billion for Hillshire. Never mind that earlier this month, in a possible move to thwart Pilgrim's Pride, Hillshire bid $4.2 billion for Pinnacle Foods.

Some major drivers behind the ongoing food fight are:

• Demand for growth. It's extremely expensive to create and grow new brands — particularly food brands. It's much cheaper to grow by purchasing a company with familiar brands. "They're looking to buy market share rather than build it," says David Lewis, senior vice president at the Astec Analytics division at SunGard Financial Systems.

• Desire to cut costs. When one company talks about "synergies" with another that typically means cost-cutting. The combined food companies can pay less for commodities, transportation and packaging, says Silverstein, "because they have more market power."

• Aim for cheap financing. Interest rates are so low right now that it's easier and cheaper to finance big deals with debt than at just about any other time, notes Gary Stibel, CEO of the New England Consulting Group.

• Lust for scale. Bigger food makers have more power with retailers and suppliers, Stibel says. "To hold on to your seat at the table with Wal-Mart, you'd better have scale."

• Opportunity to expand. Many food makers are eager to expand into adjacent categories "to build awareness across different areas of packaged food," says Farha Aslam, managing director at Stephens Inc.

• Desire to be defensive. Some food makers wa! nt their lead — or to stop certain competitors from gaining market share, Aslam says.

• Urge to merge. Amid the nation's estimated 13,000 food companies, there fewer than 1,000 that are true takeover, merger or acquisition targets, Silverstein says. Uniqueness of brand or product makes them targets. And the universe, he notes, is contracting.

Top 5 Services Stocks To Watch Right Now

• Need to feed egos. CEOs of major food companies know they'll be remembered for one of two things: the products they create or companies they acquire, Silverstein says. The latter is easier than the former.

• Chance to shine. For many consumers, protein, the chief food category involved in these current merger talks, is back on-trend, Stibel says. Now, for example, there are more nutritionally-focused offerings like antibiotic-free meats. "Protein is no longer the big, bad dude," he says.

Casey’s: Back on Base, But Will It Score?

Buy Rite Aid5 Dividend ETFs That Provide Safety for the Long Haul Recent Posts: Go Yield Hunting in These 3 Preferred Stocks Your Core Portfolio: More Special Situations (Shorts) What Q2 Earnings Are Telling Us View All Posts

It's been a mighty weird year for Casey's General Stores (CASY). The company has had some tough quarters, but just when things are looking bleak, the team got some runners on base and drove a few home.

Casey's has a concept I really like, in that it has 1,700 stores across 14 states, selling all manner of convenience-store products. The company is a rural operation at its core, with some 60% of stores in areas with fewer than 5,000 residents. The result is that it doesn't have a lot of competition as it might if it were ensconced in urban areas, so it becomes part of a quasi-oligopoly.

As a convenience store, it doesn’t have direct competition from Dollar Tree (DLTR) or Family Dollar (FDO) because these dollar stores aren't exclusively focused on food (and they have no gasoline or cigarette sales), and they're targeted at the folks who are trying to save money over convenience, not vice versa. The convenience angle is another reason why Walmart (WMT) and Costco (COST) aren’t competitors, since those behemoths are about a total shopping experience.

The company had a lot of work to do after disappointing investors in Q4. Revenues missed expectations, EPS came in 7% lower year-over-year, and operating margins fell, as did net margins. But its fiscal first quarter, the company slugged some solid hits into the outfield. Revenue exploded 13%, leading to a 43% increase in EPS.

But what was driving those increases?

The company began a partnership with Hy-Vee Stores, in which customers who purchase certain items at the stores can get a fuel discount credit at Casey's. The company stated it has an annual goal of increasing same-store gas sales 1.5%. This partnership contributed to a 3.2% comp increase, and average margin of 22 cents per gallon — well above the company's target of 15 cents.

Top Growth Companies To Watch For 2015

Grocery and other merchandise experienced strong growth, with comps up 6.1% vs. a 5% target, and average margin of 32.3% vs. a 32.7% target. Cigarette price reductions held back an even greater increase.

We all like prepared food and drink when hunger hits on the road. Comps lifted an astonishing 11.9% vs. a 9% target, and margins hit 62% vs. the 61.8% target. Category sales were up 16.5% total.

All these increases did come at the expense of increased operating costs (14%), as the company marketed its new initiatives and expanded to 24 hours in some locations.

Casey's doesn't seem to think the overall economic environment is going to impact their performance, as the company intends to build or acquire 75 to 100 stores this year. It's a strong vote of confidence that its particular niche is still a viable option for many Americans. This is also a good sign overall for the economy, in that folks in these communities still value convenience over price enough to push sales as much as they did.

There are tricks to this business. The company relies on commodities like cheese, the cost per pound of which increased 11% over the year, in order to make pizzas. Cigarette prices can fluctuate, as can gasoline prices.

The company sits on $190 million in cash and manageable debt of $819 million. I don’t like the $150 million increase in debt, but the company generated $138 million in operating cash flow this quarter, and only blew through $74 million in capex. Still, that capex will increase as it opens stores. So it'll be a race between maintaining cash flow to service debt. As long as numbers hit company targets, it should be fine.

Alas, Casey's stock remains much too expensive to purchase. Analysts see five-year growth at 10.4% annually, and on FY14 estimates of $3.67 with a 1.2% yield, that gives us a fair value of around $43. However, the stock currently trades at $71.

I'm not paying that much, even for a seat in the outfield bleachers.

Alan Diaz/APAmerican Airlines did better at staying on schedule last year than it did in 2012, when it accused pilots of a work slowdown. DALLAS -- A big drop in customer complaints helped U.S. airlines post their best ratings ever even though more flights were late and more bags were mishandled, according to a report released Monday by university researchers. Virgin America topped the ratings, and three regional airlines scored at the bottom. Among the four biggest airlines, Delta Air Lines (DAL) ranked best followed by Southwest (LUV), American (AAL) and United (UAL), according to researchers from Wichita State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The researchers have graded airlines since 1991 on government figures for on-time performance, mishandled bags, bumping passengers, and complaints filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation. Their key findings: On-Time Performance: Airlines operated 78.4 percent of their flights on time in 2013, down from 81.8 percent in 2012. Best: Hawaiian Airlines (HA); worst: American Eagle. Only two airlines improved: American Airlines and United. Bag Handling: The rate of lost, stolen or delayed bags rose 5 percent. Best: Virgin America; worst: American Eagle. Bumping: The rate of bumping passengers from flights fell 8 percent. Best: JetBlue Airways (JBLU); worst: SkyWest (SKYW). Complaints: Consumer complaints to the government dropped 15 percent in 2013 after rising 20 percent the year before. Best: Southwest Airlines; worst: Frontier (RJET). One of the report's authors, Wichita State business professor Dean Headley, credited the drop in complaints partly to United Airlines. The company suffered several computer-network outages and grounded hundreds of flights in 2012 when it combined the United and Continental computer networks after a merger, but "got their act together" in 2013, he said. Headley said the drop in complaints might also reflect "a certain amount of resignation" that "it's neve

Lynne Sladky/AP WASHINGTON -- U.S. airlines scored their second best performance last year in the more than two decades that researchers have been measuring airline quality, with Virgin America the leader, says an annual report released Monday. The report ranked the 14 largest U.S. airlines based on on-time arrivals, mishandled bags, consumer complaints and passengers who were bought tickets but were turned away because flights were over booked. Airline performance in 2012 was the second highest in the 23 years that Wichita State University at Omaha in Nebraska and Purdue University in Indiana have tracked the performance of airlines. The airline's best year was 2011. Virgin America, headquartered in Burlingame, Calif., did the best job on baggage handling and had the second-lowest rate of passengers denied seats due to overbookings. United Airlines (UAL), whose consumer complaint rate nearly doubled last year, had the worst performance. United has merged with Continental Airlines, but has had rough spots in integrating the operations of the two carriers. The number of complaints consumers filed with the Department of Transportation overall surged by one-fifth last year to 11,445 complaints, up from 9,414 in 2011. "Over the 20 some year history we've looked at it, this is still the best time of airline performance we've ever seen," said Dean Headley, a business professor at Wichita State University in Kansas, who has co-written the annual report. The best year was 2011, which was only slightly better than last year, he said. Despite those improvements, it isn't surprising that passengers are getting grumpier, Headley said. Carriers keep shrinking the size of seats in order to stuff more people into planes. Empty middle seats that might provide a little more room have vanished. And more people who have bought tickets are being turned away because flights are overbooked. "The way airlines have taken 130-seat airplanes and expanded them to 150 seats to sque

Manufacturing's also fallen squarely into contraction territory and, as demand wanes in the sector, materials stocks dependent on China for growth will become more dangerous for investors. Chinese materials stocks are in an especially tight spot: the Aluminum Corporation of China (NYSE: ACH  ) , also known as Chinalco, saw its shares plummet 9% this week alone, part of a 38% fall year to date as the aluminum market has declined. Chinalco will have a tough time ahead with cash drying up, lending cutting back, and manufacturing demand mired in contraction. Oversupply has also cut into this company's prospects, as high production of aluminum in earlier years is coming back to bite China now. It's hitting hard across Chinese materials stocks wherever oversupply is concerned, especially at giants such as Wuhan Iron and Steel, the fastest growingof China's leading steel firms that dwarf U.S. competitors.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

Output at Chinese manufacturersis declining and stockpiles of goods are increasing, according to HSBC's PMI reading. The combination is a storm of weak demand and oversupply for firms such as leading aluminum producer Chinalco (NYSE: ACH  ) , which is already in a rut with the fall of aluminum prices around the world and global demand still weak. Chinalco slowed production recently to deal with falling demand, but with China representingaround 45% of the world's demand for the metal last year, falling demand in the world's second-largest economy is a killer blow to Chinalco and other powers in the industry. Until Chinese manufacturing can post a significant bounce-back, aluminum and other metals providers will be under serious pressure.

Diller then spins off some of these entities into public companies, as he did with Home Shopping Network (HSNI) and timeshare company Interval Leisure Group (IILG). The company 52 week high was $80.64, it trades right now at $66. I love to make this one of my stocks to buy in the below the $50 mark, but IACI would be a bargain under $55.

It's not hard to find an attractive stock with the market is rallying - the rising tide lifts all stocks. The real test for a ticker is when the whole market is tanking (like Thursday), and a stock manages to make gains against the grain. Enter NuPathe Inc. (NASDAQ:PATH). This little biopharma stock is up 3% today, which isn't much, but given the market it's a virtual windfall. It's the reason for the rally - or lack of a reason to be more specific - that makes PATH such a compelling buy here.

4 Stocks Under $10 Making Big Moves

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- At Stockpickr, we track daily portfolios of stocks that are the biggest percentage gainers and the biggest percentage losers.

Stocks that are making large moves like these are favorites among short-term traders because they can jump into these names and try to capture some of that massive volatility. Stocks that are making big-percentage moves either up or down are usually in play because their sector is becoming attractive or they have a major fundamental catalyst such as a recent earnings release. Sometimes stocks making big moves have been hit with an analyst upgrade or an analyst downgrade.

Regardless of the reason behind it, when a stock makes a large-percentage move, it is often just the start of a new major trend -- a trend that can lead to huge profits. If you time your trade correctly, combining technical indicators with fundamental trends, discipline and sound money management, you will be well on your way to investment success.

With that in mind, let's take a closer look at a several stocks under $10 that are making large moves to the upside.

American Apparel

American Apparel (APP), designs, manufactures, distributes, retails and sells branded fashion basic apparel products, and clothing and accessories for women, men, children, and babies. This stock closed up 6.3% to 65 cents per share in Thursday's trading session.

Thursday's Range: $0.57-$0.66

52-Week Range: $0.46-$2.17

Thursday's Volume: 2.12 million

Three-Month Average Volume: 2.65 million

From a technical perspective, APP bounced sharply higher here right off its 50-day moving average of 61 cents per share with decent upside volume. This stock recently pulled back from 75 cents per share to Thursday's low of 57 cents per share with light downside volume. Market players should now look for a continuation move higher in the short-term if APP manages to take out Thursday's intraday high of 66 cents per share with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in APP as long as it's trending above its 50-day at 61 cents per share and then once it sustains a move or close above 66 cents per share with volume that hits near or above 2.65 million shares. If that move kicks off soon, then APP will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at 75 to 82 cents per share.

Oi

Oi (OIBR) provides integrated telecommunication services for residential customers, companies and governmental agencies in Brazil. This stock closed up 2.5% to 85 cents per share in Thursday's trading session.

Thursday's Range: $0.82-$0.86

52-Week Range: $0.76-$2.34

Thursday's Volume: 22.83 million

Three-Month Average Volume: 14.72 million

From a technical perspective, OIBR jumped modestly higher here right above some near-term support at 80 cents per share with heavy upside volume. This stock has been downtrending badly for the last five months, with shares sliding lower from its high of $1.97 to its recent 52-week low of 76 cents per share. During that downtrend, shares of OBIR have been making mostly lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of OIBR now look ready to rebound and potentially trigger a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if OIBR manages to take out Thursday's intraday high of 86 cents to more near-term overhead resistance at 90 cents per share with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in OIBR as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at 80 cents to 76 cents per share and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 14.72 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then OIBR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.02 to $1.08 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give OIBR a chance to tag its 50-day moving average of $1.18 to more resistance at $1.27.

Endocyte

Endocyte (ECYT), a biopharmaceutical company, develops targeted therapies for the treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases in the U.S. This stock closed up 2.2% to $6.45 a share in Thursday's trading session.

Top 5 Financial Companies To Buy For 2015

Thursday's Range: $6.14-$6.48

52-Week Range: $6.01-$33.70

Thursday's Volume: 893,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 1.91 million

From a technical perspective, ECYT jumped higher here right above its recent 52-week low of $6.01 with lighter-than-average volume. This move higher on Thursday is starting to push shares of ECYT within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if ECYT manages to clear some near-term overhead resistance levels at $6.82 to $7.30 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ECYT as long as it's trending above its 52-week low of $6.01 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 1.91 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ECYT will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-day zone from earlier this month that started above $17.50.

Ciber

Ciber (CBR) operates as an information technology company. This stock closed up 6.8 % to $4.50 a share in Thursday's trading session.

Thursday's Range: $4.21-$4.54

52-Week Range: $3.08-$4.91

Thursday's Volume: 787,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 221,444

From a technical perspective, CBR bounced sharply higher here right above some near-term support at $4.13 and back above its 50-day moving average of $4.41 with heavy upside volume flows. This bounce higher on Thursday is quickly pushing shares of CBR within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if CBR manages to take out some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.64 to $4.73 and then once it takes out its 52-week high of $4.91 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CBR as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $4.13 or at $4.10 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 221,444 shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then CBR will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory above $4.91, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $5.50 to $6.

How Will Sodastream (SODA) Stock React To This Downgrade?

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Shares of Sodastream International Ltd. (SODA) were downgraded to "underweight" from "equal weight" at Barclays (BCS) with a $35.00 price target.

The stock is down -1.19% to $39.15 in pre-market trade.

Must Read: Warren Buffett's 25 Favorite Growth Stocks STOCKS TO BUY: TheStreet Quant Ratings has identified a handful of stocks that can potentially TRIPLE in the next 12 months. Learn more.

Separately, TheStreet Ratings team rates SODASTREAM INTERNATIONAL LTD as a Hold with a ratings score of C. TheStreet Ratings Team has this to say about their recommendation: "We rate SODASTREAM INTERNATIONAL LTD (SODA) a HOLD. The primary factors that have impacted our rating are mixed some indicating strength, some showing weaknesses, with little evidence to justify the expectation of either a positive or negative performance for this stock relative to most other stocks. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its revenue growth, largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures and good cash flow from operations. However, as a counter to these strengths, we also find weaknesses including a generally disappointing performance in the stock itself, feeble growth in the company's earnings per share and deteriorating net income." Highlights from the analysis by TheStreet Ratings Team goes as follows: SODA's revenue growth trails the industry average of 19.0%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues slightly increased by 0.5%. This growth in revenue does not appear to have trickled down to the company's bottom line, displayed by a decline in earnings per share. SODA's debt-to-equity ratio is very low at 0.07 and is currently below that of the industry average, implying that there has been very successful management of debt levels. Along with the favorable debt-to-equity ratio, the company maintains an adequate quick ratio of 1.05, which illustrates the ability to avoid short-term cash problems. The gross profit margin for SODASTREAM INTERNATIONAL LTD is rather high; currently it is at 55.84%. Regardless of SODA's high profit margin, it has managed to decrease from the same period last year. Despite the mixed results of the gross profit margin, the net profit margin of 1.50% trails the industry average. SODASTREAM INTERNATIONAL LTD has experienced a steep decline in earnings per share in the most recent quarter in comparison to its performance from the same quarter a year ago. Earnings per share have declined over the last year. We anticipate that this should continue in the coming year. During the past fiscal year, SODASTREAM INTERNATIONAL LTD reported lower earnings of $1.96 versus $2.09 in the prior year. For the next year, the market is expecting a contraction of 1.0% in earnings ($1.94 versus $1.96). The company, on the basis of change in net income from the same quarter one year ago, has significantly underperformed when compared to that of the S&P 500 and the Household Durables industry. The net income has significantly decreased by 85.3% when compared to the same quarter one year ago, falling from $12.08 million to $1.78 million. The Company has roaming agreements with other wireless broadband mobile carriers that allow them to offer its customers service in many areas when they are outside its service area. These roaming agreements, together with the area it serve with its own networks, allows its customers to receive service in an area covering over 280 million in total population under the Metro USA brand. The Company sells products and services to customers through its Company-owned retail stores, as well as indirectly through relationships with independent retailers and third party dealers. Its service allows its customers to place unlimited local calls from within its local service area and to receive unlimited calls from any area while in its service area, for a flat-rate monthly service fee. For additional usage fees, it also provide certain other value-added services. All of these plans require payment in advance for one month of service. If no payment is made in advance for month of service, service is suspended at the end of the month that was paid for by the customer and, if the customer does not pay within 30 day! s, the customer is terminated. It believes its service plans differentiate them from the more complex plans and long-term contract requirements of traditional wireless carriers.

In the aggregate, as of December 31, 2012, it offers wireless broadband mobile services using its own network.

The Company operates 1xRTT CDMA networks in all of the metropolitan areas it serves and it has upgraded its networks to 4G LTE in all of metropolitan areas. It also has deployed EVDO at selected high use sites in its CDMA network to increase network data capacity to meet the growing data needs of iy customers. Its network includes a mobile switching center (for CDMA), enhanced packet core (for 4G LTE), and IP core. These serve several purposes, including routing traffic, managing call handoffs, and managing access to the public switched telephone network (for CDMA) or the Internet (CDMA and 4G LTE). The switching centers and na! tional op! erations center provide around-the-clock monitoring of its network. It also has negotiated interconnection agreements with relevant local exchange carriers, or LECs, in its service areas. It uses third-party providers for domestic and international long distance services, international SMS interconnection with the public switched network and other carriers, roaming services, and the majority of its backhaul services.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By GURUFOCUS]

T-Mobile (TMUS) We had the opportunity to establish a position in T-Mobile in November when the Company conducted a secondary offering at $25. The offering represented a favorable relative valuation versus peers, enhanced by recently improved relative operating performance and an attractive EBITDA growth trajectory.

  • [By Sean Williams]

    Can you hear me now?
The downside to the U.S. telecom and entertainment service provider business is that it's rife with competition. Verizon is one of only two behemoth domestic carriers -- the other being AT&T-- that's really able to throw its weight around with regard to wireless pricing and flexibility. That doesn't stop the little guys from trying, however, as Sprint Nextelagreed to a big investment by Japan's SoftBank, which will give it a majority stake in Verizon in exchange for billions of dollars to build out its 4G LTE network. Similarly, T-Mobile (NYSE: TMUS  ) merged with MetroPCS to give the bigger service providers a run for their money, and it's been offering no-obligation iPhone contracts to lure new customers.

  • [By Adam Levy]

AT&T (NYSE: T  ) added 566,000 postpaid customers in the fourth quarter. That was good enough to best Sprint (NYSE: S  ) , but trailed Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) and T-Mobile (NYSE: TMUS  ) . A huge number of those net new customers were tablet owners -- 440,000.

  • [By Jonathan Berr]

Shares of Sprint (S) and T-Mobile US (TMUS), which have been also-rans in the U.S. wireless market for as long as most people can remember, enjoyed spectacular 2013 returns as investors bet that the third- and fourth-largest players would combine forces to take on larger rivals Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonathan Morgan]

Telecom Italia SpA (TIT) jumped 6.2 percent to 65.6 euro cents. The phone company that was stripped of its investment-grade rating is seeking at least 9 billion euros for its controlling stake in Brazilian wireless carrier Tim Participacoes SA (TIMP3), according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter.

  • [By Inyoung Hwang]

Telecom Italia climbed 5.2 percent to 64.2 euro cents, its highest price since May. The telecommunications operator would gain enough funds to improve its domestic business if it sells at least 4 billion euros ($5.4 billion) of shares or its stake in Tim Participacoes SA (TIMP3) in Brazil, according to Goldman Sachs.

  • [By Zahra Hankir]

Brazil Ibovespa extended its weekly decline to 3.3 percent. Mobile carrier Tim Participacoes SA (TIMP3) sank after parent Telecom Italia SpA (TIT) chief executive officer said its Brazilian assets are strategic, damping speculation the local unit will be sold.

Vodafone is a supplier of communications products and services worldwide. Increased regulation and a European recession have the company worried. However, the firm still managed to meet analyst expectations during a recent earnings report. The stock is currently sitting near the top of a range that it has been trying to break above. Over most of the last three years, investors in the company have been optimistic, as earnings and revenue figures have been mixed. Relative to its peers and sector, Vodafone has been a year-to-date performance leader. WAIT AND SEE what Vodafone does in coming quarters.
