Stores Get Stingy About Returns

As you're double-checking your holiday shopping list, tack on a reminder to read each store's return policy before making your purchase. Some retailers are feeling a little less generous when it comes to returns. That even includes REI, an outdoor gear and sporting goods retailer long known for its no-time-limit and no-questions-asked return policy. The store recently trimmed its return window to one year, unless the merchandise is defective. To deter "wardrobing" -- the practice of buying, using and then returning a product (usually clothing) for a refund -- Bloomingdale's recently began tagging some of its apparel with conspicuous plastic tags. If a tag is removed, shoppers can't return the item.

SEE ALSO: Why You Should Start Your Holiday Shopping Now

Stingier policies are intended to combat return fraud. Last year, fraudulent returns cost retailers $8.9 billion, according to the National Retail Federation, $2.9 billion of which occurred during the holiday season. Reports of wardrobing increased 40% from 2009 to 2012, says the NRF.

Customers can expect tougher return policies to spread. "As retailers see competitors or stores with some of the most lenient policies tighten up, it's going to signal to them that they can do the same," says Phoenix retail consultant Jeff Green. "We're going to see a shift toward a shorter, 30-day return policy in 2014." Customers can also expect added scrutiny when taking back merchandise without a receipt.

Retailers want to identify the bad actors. To do so, some companies are gathering data on customers who return merchandise, watching for suspicious patterns and warning or denying repeat offenders. Clerks may ask for state-issued identification, such as a driver's license, before you can make a return. Nearly 10% of retailers require ID for returns made with a receipt, and 73% require ID for returns made without a receipt. Some scan the ID into their own system; others send the info to a third party. If you exceed a retailer's limit for the number of returns within a given time frame or for the value of returned products, you could be denied more returns for a period of time (typically 90 days). If you are given a warning or denied a return, the Retail Equation, a company that collects return information for 27,000 merchants in North America, will provide you with the information in its return-activity report over the phone. To request your report, visit www.theretailequation.com/consumers.

Best Information Technology Stocks To Watch For 2015

Despite the general trend toward Grinchier return policies, some retailers are giving shoppers a break during the holidays or when shopping online. Last year, 10% of retailers relaxed their return policies for the holidays, and similar promotions are expected this year. Lenient online return policies and acceptance of returns in stores for items bought online will likely continue. Look for free shipping for both purchases and returns, which Neiman Marcus debuted in October.

As policies shift, the key to hassle-free returns will be staying organized. The ReturnGuru app, free for iPhone and Android, lets you snap pictures of your receipts, then saves them and reminds you as the deadline approaches to make returns. The new rules may take some getting used to. But if you expect great deals, that's part of the trade-off.

Bubble sign? Snapchat gets $3B Facebook offer

SAN FRANCISCO — A company of a few dozen employees with no foreseeable profit and a fresh-faced 23-year-old CEO?

Sure, sounds worth at least $3 billion in cash to me.

In the tech-frenzied world of today — roughly a week after Twitter's resounding IPO and a few months after Yahoo showered $1 billion on blogging platform Tumblr — anything seems possible.

NEWS: Report -- Snapchat turned down $3B offer from Facebook

Even, improbably, photo-messaging service Snapchat's spurning Facebook's acquisition bid, according to a report confirmed by USA TODAY. The Wall Street Journal reported Snapchat nixed an earlier $1 billion offer from Facebook last year. (Snapchat may be holding out for a better deal from another company, too, according to the Journal report.)

TALKING TECH: Snapchat's young audience fuels a growth streak

Incredulity aside, Facebook sees the future of social networking, and it is in pictures. Lots of them. That's why it dangled an all-cash offer for 2-year-old Snapchat — its largest acquisition bid, dwarfing the $1 billion it plunked on photo-sharing app Instagram last year.

The photo fixation is simple: Facebook last month admitted younger members are using the network less. Many of them are flocking to sites like Snapchat, which lets people exchange photos and videos that disappear a few seconds after being viewed, leaving little digital footprint for parents and teachers to see.

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel appears to be sitting on a rocket. The site zoomed to 350 million monthly members in September from 200 million in June.

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, whose other company, Square, is rumored to be racing to an IPO next year, cited Snapchat as one of the startups that excite him during a discussion with USA TODAY in New York in September.

I wonder if Jack could imagine such an offer. Then again, these days almost anything seems possible in tech.

Not so much competing, as converting
Trex's success, like Tesla, is a product of innovation that's outside the norm of the market that it's disrupting. Just as the automotive industry is dominated by very large companies like General Motors and Toyota, Trex competes with giants like Weyerhaeuser  (NYSE: WY  ) , the world's largest lumber producer. But much like Tesla, it's not really competing directly against competitive products so much as it's offering a better alternative to what the competition has.

The Company's product line includes starches and sweeteners, animal feed products and edible corn oil.

The Company's starch-based products include both food-grade and industrial starches. The Company's sweetener products include glucose syrups, high maltose syrups, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), caramel color, dextrose, polyols, maltodextrins and glucose and syrup solids. Sweetener Products

The Company's sweetener products represented approximately 44% of the Company's net sales for the year ended December 31, 2012. G lucose syrups are fundamental ingredients used in food products, such as baked goods, snack foods, beverages, canned fruits, condiments, candy and other sweets, dairy products, ice cream, jams and jellies, prepared mixes and table syrups. Glucose syrups offer functionality in addition to sweetness to processed foods. High Maltose Syrup is special type of glucose syrup, which is primarily used as a fermentable sugar in brewing beers. High maltose syrups are also used in the production of confections, canning and some other food processing applications. The Company's high maltose syrups actually speeds the fermentation process, allowing brewers to increase capacity without adding capital.

High fructose corn syrup is used in a variety of consumer products, including soft drinks, fruit-flavored beverages, baked goods, dairy products, confections and other food and beverage products. In addition to sweetness and ease of use, high fructose corn syrup pr! ovides body, hum ectancy and aids in browning, freezing point and crystalliza! tion control.

In addition to sweetn ess, polyols inhibit crystallization; provide binding, humectancy and plasticity; add texture; extend shelf life; prevent moisture migration, and are an excipient suitable for tableting.

Maltodextrins and Glucose Syrup Solids products have a multitude of food applications, including formulations where liquid syrups cannot be used. Maltodextrins are resistant to browning, provide solubility, have a low hydroscopicity (do not retain moisture), and are ideal for their carrier/bulking properties. Glucose syrup solids have a bland flavor, remain clear in solution are easy to handle and provide bulking properties.

A huge net-net like Ingram Micro (IM) with nine out of ten years of profits in the last decade is pretty unusual. And Ingram operates on a razor-thin margin. It usually makes about one cent in profit for every dollar of sales.

My take is that Qualcomm has rapidly established itself as the de facto standard for connecting with medical devices. The company isn't doing it alone, though. It teamed with Ingram Micro (NYSE: IM  ) , the world's largest technology distributor, to support the implementation, logistics, and financial services related to the 2net hub and platform. This partnership should help propagate Qualcomm's technology more effectively than the company could have done on its own.

Top 10 Paper Companies To Buy Right Now

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Home BancShares (NASDAQ: HOMB  ) , the holding company of Centennial Bank, jumped as much as 13% after receiving an analyst upgrade.

So what: Before we get to the upgrade we have to understand the impetus for the upgrade which was yesterday's announced merger between Home BancShares and Liberty BancShares which will create the second-largest bank headquartered in Arkansas. Under the terms of the deal, Liberty's shareholders will receive $250 million in Home BancShares' stock and $30 million in cash. In lieu of the merger, research firm Wunderlich upgraded Home BancShares to "buy" from "hold" and upped its price target all the way to $29 from a previous mark of $20.50.

Now what: As I've said before, if there's an industry more ripe for mergers and acquisitions than any other it's regional banks. Many would do well for themselves and shareholders by combining their strengths to take on national banks which aren't seen in particularly good light by consumers. The combined bank will have $7.1 billion in assets and will double the number of branches Home BancShares currently possesses, making it a positive move, at least from what I'm seeing on paper.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By ovenerio]

The company has a current ROE of 14.5% which is higher than the industry median. Also, it is higher than the ones exhibit by Sealed Air Corp (SEE) and Sonoco Products Co (SON). In general, analysts consider ROE ratios in the 15-20% range as representing attractive levels for investment. So for investors looking at those levels, MeadWestvaco Corp (MWV) and Packaging Corp of America (PKG) could be the options. It is very important to understand this metric before investing, and it is important to look at the trend in ROE over time.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Blake Bos]

In this video, Motley Fool industrials analyst Blake Bos outlines three areas investors need to watch at Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) . First, the integration of acquisitions: Caterpillar has made some historically large acquisitions. How these acquisitions are integrated into the company and how synergies are achieved will be important. Second, commodity prices: One of Caterpillar's acquisitions was Bucyrus, a mining equipment company. While this expanded Caterpillar's presence in the mining industry, that same business is highly sensitive to commodity prices. If commodities fall, so will revenues from this segment. Lastly, Caterpillar is looking to roll out a new manufacturing system to help reduce costs. This could be important for its future growth in China where Caterpillar competes with Komatsu. Right now, Komatsu has the largest market share in China -- Caterpillar will need all the help it can get to successfully compete.

According to Nabors CEO Anthony Petrello, this has led to a very competitive market: "It is not unusual to bid frac jobs against 20 other pumpers, and sometimes as many as 35 show up. We have seen some instances of competitors winning bids with economics that at least from our perspective appear to be near cash break-even."

    Where growth will come from
One area that Newell Rubbermaid still has to tap fully is emerging markets. The company has done a good job of expanding overseas, with 17% annual growth in Latin America. But with barely a quarter of its sales coming from outside the U.S. and Canada, the company has a lot further to go. Storage rival Tupperware (NYSE: TUP  ) gets fully 60% of its total revenue from emerging markets, and it too has seen impressive gains in South America as well as the Asia-Pacific region.

Why Health Management Associates Shares Soared

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Health Management Associates (NYSE: HMA  ) , an acute-care hospital and health care facility operator in the U.S., jumped as much as 11% after a hedge fund noted interest in raising its stake in the company and following two analyst upgrades.

So what: The bump primarily comes from a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission in which Glenview Capital -- currently Health Management's largest shareholders with 37.8 million shares – urged the company to abandon or amend its poison pill to allow it to acquire up to 25% of all outstanding shares (currently the cap is 15%). Glenview also noted in that filing that it'd consider replacing part or all of Health Management's board of directors. In addition to this ongoing drama, research firms CRT Capital and WallachBeth upgraded Health Management to "hold" and "buy," respectively, from previous ratings of "sell" and "hold."

Now what: This certainly has all the makings of takeover chatter despite Glenview expressing previously that it never had any intention of purchasing a majority stake in the company. The bigger driving force, though, for hospital stocks like Health Management will be the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in 2014, which will mandate individuals to carry insurance. The thesis here is that if people are required to carry insurance, then the bad debt provisions that stem from treating patients who can't pay should shrink considerably and allow hospital margins to soar. You'd certainly be hard-pressed to find a sector ready to benefit more from Obamacare than the hospital sector, however, at 15 times forward earnings, I suspect you can find cheaper alternatives within the sector than Health Management.

Craving more input? Start by adding Health Management Associates to your free and personalized watchlist so you can keep up on the latest news with the company.

Obamacare will undoubtedly have far-reaching effects, especially in the hospital sector and on companies like Health Management Associates. Top Industrial Disributor Companies To Own In Right Now

Radio frequency (RF) chip manufacturer Skyworks Solutions (SWKS) has had some bad luck this year, because despite three straight quarters of solid results, the company's shares have appreciated only 10% while the NASDAQ is up 21%. In the past, the company's performance was directly linked to Apple's (AAPL) performance, as it derived 29% of its 2012 revenue from the smartphone maker. Thus, any negative news regarding the iPhone manufacturer was not well received by investors.

More than an Apple supplier

Besides having Apple as its client, the company has other major mobile companies using its products, such as Samsung, Nokia, and LG, with Samsung becoming the most important component of Skyworks' sales. Furthermore, Cisco Systems employs Skyworks' processors for its wireless routing range. Giants like General Electric and Philips build medical devices using a range of Skyworks' products.

Skyworks also supplies its chips to car makers and expects all cars to get digital communications built into them in the next five years, up from the current 5%. The company is well equipped to provide products in various fields such as medical, industrial, military, infrastructure, and smart energy. Thus, going forward, the company's performance is nowhere centered on how the iPhone or iPad does, as it is consistently adding to its client base while maintaining strong relations with the current clients.

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Japanese stocks opened lower Thursday, as gains for the yen and losses for Wall Street conspired to drive the Nikkei Stock Average (JP:NIK) down 1.2% to 15,333.35, extending Wednesday's 0.6% loss. The Topix fell 0.7%, with the U.S. dollar (USDJPY) slipping to 102.46 yen, down from around 楼102.80 at the start of the previous session, but off its lows in late Wednesday trade. Electronics firms and other techs helped lead the loss, with Sony Corp. (JP:6758) (SNE) falling 1.4%, Nikon Corp. (JP:7731) (NINOF) off 2.4%, and Alps Electric Co. (JP:6770) 1.8% lower. LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- With the yen holding on to its gains and investors cautious as earnings season kicks off, Japanese stocks slid lower Friday after closing the previous day with some late-session gains. The Nikkei Stock Average (JP:NIK) fell 0.9% to 14,358.28, with the Topix down 0.8%, as the dollar bought 97.36 yen, little changed from 24 hours earlier. The relatively strong yen weighed on some names with high global exposure, as Sharp Corp. (JP:6753) (SHCAF) lost 1%, Pioneer Corp. (JP:6773) (PNCOF) dropped 1.6%, and Bridgestone Corp. (JP:5108) (BRDCF) fell 1.2%. An outlook cut from Canon Inc. (JP:7751) (CAJ) helped send its shares down 1%, while rival Nikon Corp. (JP:7731) (NINOF) lost 1.8%, though Olympus Corp. (JP:7733) (OCPNF) gained 1%. Telecoms were weak, with Softbank Corp. (JP:9984) (SFTBF) falling 2.5%, KDDI Corp. (JP:9433) (KDDIF) down 1.7%, and NTT DoCoMo Inc. (JP:9437) (NTDMF)

Top Industrial Disributor Companies To Own In Right Now: ImmunoCellular Therapeutics Ltd (IMUC)

ImmunoCellular Therapeutics, Ltd., incorporated on March 20, 1987, is a clinical-stage biotechnology company. The Company is engaged in developing immune-based therapies for the treatment of cancers, such as brain, ovarian and other solid tumors. Immunotherapy is an approach to treat cancer in which a patient own immune system is stimulated to target tumor antigens, which are molecular signals that the immune system uses to identify foreign bodies. The Company products include ICT-107, ICT-140, ICT-120, ICT-109 and DIAAD. ICT-107, the pipeline product, is a Phase II therapeutic dendritic cell (DC) vaccine for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the common and lethal type of brain cancer. ICT-107 is designed to activate a patient immune system to target six different tumor-associated antigens. In February 2012, it acquired a world-wide license from the University of Pennsylvania and The John Hopkins University (JHU).

The Company in addition to ICT-107, is also developing other therapeutic DC vaccines: ICT-140 for ovarian cancer and ICT-121 for recurrent GBM. ICT-140 targets seven tumor-associated antigens expressed on ovarian cancer cells. ICT-107 is a DC vaccine that targets six different tumor-associated antigens that are found on patientstumor cells; four of the six antigens are expressed on CSCs. The therapeutic vaccine is used subsequent to conventional therapy or concomitantly with chemotherapy in patients with newly diagnosed GBM. ICT-140 is a DC vaccine that targets seven different ovarian cancer antigens. ICT-121 is a DC vaccine that targets CD133 antigens; it has the potential to be a universal cancer vaccine because CD133 is widely expressed on CSCs from a majority of cancers. Data from this small study demonstrated that ICT-109 had a statistically ability to discriminate between cancerous and non-cancerous samples, suggesting the potential to detect pancreatic and lung cancer in plasma and serum study sets. The DIAAD (differential immunization for an! tigen and antibody discovery) platform it acquired from Molecular Discoveries utilizes immunological tolerization to accelerate the discovery of the molecular differences between diseased cells and their normal counterparts. The monoclonal antibodies produced by DIAAD provide the basis for the discovery and development of its potential diagnostic and therapeutic products.

The Company competes with Dendreon, Oncothyreon, Galena, Bavarian Nordic and Immunovaccine, Northwest Biotherapeutics, Prima Biomed, DCPrime, Roche/Genentech, Seattle Genetics, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Immunogen.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Wallace Witkowski]

Shares of ImmunoCellular (IMUC) jumped after the drug developer said data on a mid-stage brain cancer drug study were looking encouraging.

  • [By Smith On Stocks]

Using my assumptions, the common of Agenus might be worth about $7.00 per share in early 2014 based on the royalties from the Glaxo vaccines and the net operating loss carry forward even if every other asset in the company were valued at zero. However, there may be substantial value in Agenus' internal vaccine programs in recurrent and newly diagnosed glioblastoma and the genital herpes vaccine. Based on a comparison to peer companies like Northwest Biotherapeutics (NWBO) and ImmunoCellular Therapeutics (IMUC), I believe that the internal programs at Agenus currently may be worth $150 million or $4.45 per share. Adding this to the value of the MAGE A-3 vaccine could produce a stock price of $11.00 in early 2014.

  • [By Lauren Pollock]

ImmunoCellular Therapeutics Ltd.(IMUC) said its leading product candidate, a dendritic cell-based vaccine for brain cancer, didn’t show a statistically significant advantage in overall survival in a Phase II study. In a research note, Maxim Group said it is pushing its EU approval date target to 2019 and lowered its estimate on the stock to $12 a share from $18 a share. The stock plunged 62% to $1.04 premarket.

Top 5 Blue Chip Companies To Own For 2014

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- It may be Halloween, but some of the scariest stuff you see today might be in your portfolio.

Must Read: Warren Buffett's Top 10 Dividend Stocks

That's because, in spite of a big bounce session today, there are some stocks that still look "toxic" in this market. The overnight decision by the Bank of Japan to hike its stimulus efforts means that the stock market may be pointing higher as a whole, but it's a bad idea to let your guard down.

Buying big, safe blue chips doesn't make you immune from owning toxic stocks, either. In fact, nearly every stock on our list today is a large-cap that's worth more than $10 billion in market value. These aren't just names to avoid buying because you might already own them today.

Just to be clear, the companies I'm talking about today aren't exactly junk. By that, I mean they're not next up in line at bankruptcy court. But that's frankly irrelevant; from a technical analysis standpoint, sellers are shoving around these toxic stocks right now. For that reason, fundamental investors need to decide how long they're willing to take the pain if they want to hold onto these firms in the weeks and months ahead. And for investors looking to buy one of these positions, it makes sense to wait for more favorable technical conditions (and a lower share price) before piling in.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tyler Crowe]

    Cleanliness is a must
Despite the potential for so much oil in the region, many people in the industry may still be a little skeptical of working offshore Brazil after watching the political fiasco following the Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) spill back in 2011. After spilling about 2,500 barrels of oil, both Chevron and rig manager Transocean (NYSE: RIG  ) were threatened with over $20 billion in fines and civil litigation, as well as a permanent expulsion from the country. That would put the spill at about $8 million per barrel spilled, which is astronomical compared to the about $5,000 per barrel BP spent so far on the Macondo spill that occurred back in 2010.

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

We think KMB will be perceived as the safest of the multinationals. Its sales outside the US are about 55% of total; this compares to 65%-70% for Procter & Gamble (PG) and Coty (COTY) and 80%-90% for Colgate (CL), Avon and Tupperware (TUP). In general, its risk to the most volatile currencies is below average (its exposure to Eastern Europe is less than 2% of sales), though it is still translating results in Venezuela (about 3% of sales and profit) at the official rate of 6.3 VEF/$ (the parallel rate just hit 175 VEF/$) and Argentina (also 3% of sales) may devalue again. The cost of important raw materials has started to weaken; as they follow oil decline they could boost gross margins in 2H15. Of note, polypropylene and natural gas are off 17% 4Q-to-date; pulp prices, while not declining much, seem manageable.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

One concern, though, is how the company handled news of Venezuela's currency devaluation. Clorox (NYSE: CLX  ) and Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE: CL  ) also felt the pinch, with Clorox taking about a $0.05 to $0.10 per-share earnings hit and Colgate losing about $0.50 per share. But they also addressed the potential devaluation more proactively than P&G did. Clorox actuallyanticipatedthe devaluation in its February earnings report, projecting the potential hit if a devaluation took place. Colgate didn't provide specific guidance in advance but clearly saw it as an issue, delivering on a promise to give prompt guidance revisions after the devaluation occurred.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Procter & Gamble have gained 0.1% to $81.44 at 2:06 p.m. today, while Unilever (UL) has risen 0.6% to $43.96, Colgate-Palmolive (CL) is little changed at $65.65 and Kimberly-Clark (KMB) has advanced 0.5% to $111.31.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Moreover, it's starting to appear that Clorox has weathered a tough part of its business cycle. Throughout the industry, Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG  ) , Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE: CL  ) , and Clorox all had to deal with rising costs for the inputs they needed to make their respective products. The companies responded by implementing price-cutting measures and passing on part of their higher costs to their customers. For its part, Clorox was able to expand its gross margins by a full percentage point, with a worse-than-normal flu season contributing to sales. Now that input-cost inflation is easing, P&G and Clorox expect to see better profitability, with growth starting to approach the faster rates that Colgate has enjoyed.
