Is Apple Set For A Strong Holiday Season?

Cupertino, California-based revolutionary gadget maker Apple (AAPL) again reminded how the company plays in a league of its own, far above any other tech behemoth, as it came out with its fiscal 2014 fourth quarter earnings. Not only did the company exceed the Street's expectations, it also topped its own guidance. That's something! On the back of the never ending and filthy demand for its latest iPhones, Apple pulled off a fabulous quarter and everything is hinting at the possibility of an even more successful fourth quarter as buyers across the world enter the biggest holiday season.

The tempting bag of Apple's numbers During the earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said, "We generated our strongest revenue growth rate in seven quarters, far surpassing our expectations we communicated in July and establishing a new record for Apple's September quarter revenue."

The iPhone-maker reported consolidated revenues of $42.1 billion, up 12% from prior year period's $37.4 billion. The bottom line also impressed the investors as it came to $8.5 billion, translating to diluted earnings per share of $1.42, up 20% year-over-year. Obviously all this was possible because of the outstanding margins the company reported: gross margin was 100bps higher at 38% over last year, and operating margin came to $11.2 billion or 26.5% of total revenues.

A look at the iOfferings As always, Apple's fourth quarter was characterized by a series of new launches, the best one being the iPhone. Apple introduced the much anticipated iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, and boy oh boy, what response the devices got. With each passing year, the craze for iPhones have gone up, but what happened this time was beyond expectation.

During the three months period, Apple sold 39.3 million iPhones, up by 5.5 million devices compared to last year when it launched the iPhone 5S and the 5C. Apple even set a new fourth quarter record for iPhone as the segment revenue surged by 21% over the previous year.

Cook was proactive to praise Apple's operational team and said, "Our operational team has done an extraordinary job executing the manufacturing ramp throughout the entire supply chain. Today we've launched in 32 countries including China and our new iPhones will be shifting in 69 countries and territories by the end of this month, making this our fastest and most successful iPhone launch ever."

Apple also launched the latest iPads – iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3. While several analysts felt the demand for the tablets are not up to scratch, Apple said its expectations from iPads were met. The company is also happy about its latest iMac with Retina 5K Display. The latest Mac devices are being powered by the revolutionary OS X Yosemite that brings to the devices new age "design and continuity features that deliver an even more fluid experience across all of our iOS devices and Mac." Even Apple Pay has gained huge traction with more than 1 million credit card registrations in three days.

Now moving on to App Store and iTunes, the company reported a 36% year-over-year growth in App Store revenue on the back of rising app downloads that have topped 85 billion during the quarter. Even the iTunes revenue reached an impressive level of $17 billion.

Things look steady for the holiday season Apple is optimistic about the company's prospects for the coming quarter, particularly because it's the holiday season. For the first quarter of fiscal 2015, Apple expects total revenues to range between $63.5 billion and $66.5 billion. Market Realist pointed out that at the mid point of the range, i.e. at $65 billion, revenues will surge by 13% year on year.

Data source: Market Realist

So what's inspiring Apple to think so tall? Well, the demand for the new iPhones has been phenomenal and even eats the demand for the very successful iPhone 5S. Apple's optimism also has to do a lot with the Apple Watch that's expected to hit the streets soon.

With the Apple Watch, the company intends to position itself as a fashion brand and not just a tech maker. The company hasn't even once referred to the Apple Watch as a smartwatch or a gadget. That's Apple's technique of marketing it. The iPhone maker wants to position the offering as a luxury watch that will also offer the convenience of a modern day connected device. Even analysts and industry experts are very optimistic about the success of the Apple Watch.

All in all, Apple had a great end to its fiscal 2014 and now expects the best ever opening for any fiscal year so far. Its strong product lineup and the ever increasing demand for its offerings are very likely to push up Apple's performance in the near future.

Best Insurance Stocks To Invest In Right Now

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Factions within the GOP want to defund the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, and in the process they're dividing and weakening the GOP, especially the leadership.

How can GOP elected officials make such an obvious miscalculation that has a massive downside and almost zero upside?

Does anyone think that a piece of legislation that doesn't fund the ACA will make it through the Senate?

Even if the Senate did somehow pass it, and it landed on Obama's desk, it would receive the fastest veto on record. You know it, I know it, and certainly the GOP calling for the removal of funding knows it. So why is it happening, and why is taxpayer money wasted on the issue? I have a theory, and it includes guns, chess and beer. This legislation is already on its way. In fact, parts of the law have already been implanted for a while now. Tanning salons pay higher taxes, and many young adults remain on their parents' insurance long after they otherwise would have left. For the government, so far so good. It legislated benefits without spending much of its own money. The next step of ACA is where the boots hit the ground: subsidies, penalties, and enough regulations to make any bureaucrat happy for a lifetime. Sure, the whole thing doesn't pass the smell test, but why would Republicans want to step between the public and the Democrat-owned ACA? Why give Democrats an out and the ability to say, "It would have worked great if only for the Republicans not giving it a chance." It's just utterly stupid to slow down what everyone that understands economics already knows: It's doomed to fail (at least in current form). In this particular case, the Republicans remind me when I was about 7 or 8 years old and visited my grandparents. It was during the holidays, and like many grandfathers in Wisconsin, mine was enjoying a beer. I watched him and decided that I truly wanted to have a beer, too. My grandfather was my hero, so it's not a surprise I wanted to be like him, and after I gathered enough courage, I asked whether I could have one too.

For the past several years, Berkshire has contrasted its own cost-free float provided by profitable underwriting against the industry (unimpressive) tendency to lose money on underwriting while generating net returns from investment income. Advisors' Opinion:

One interesting trend that could help Travelers do even better in the future is usage-based insurance, which involves insurance companies monitoring their customers' driving habits in order to judge risk more accurately. Rival Progressive (NYSE: PGR  ) pioneered the program and argues that it has helped the company pick and choose its customers better, targeting safer and more profitable drivers while letting competitors handle riskier customers. Both Travelers and Allstate (NYSE: ALL  ) have jumped on the bandwagon as well in order to avoid getting blindsided by high-risk drivers, with Allstate even offering discounts just for enrolling.

After Monday's tornado in Oklahoma, Allstate (NYSE: ALL  ) , Progressive Insurance (NYSE: PGR  ) , andTraveler's Companies (NYSE: TRV  ) all fell in the market. Along with AIG (NYSE: AIG  ) , these insurance companies represent four of the top 10 providers for property and casualty insurance in the U.S. But when disaster strikes, should investors flee, or hunker down and wait it out?

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Yet the industry is going through a time of transition right now. The devastating tornado that hit an Oklahoma City suburb in May sent shares of Progressive, Allstate (NYSE: ALL  ) , and Travelers (NYSE: TRV  ) tumbling in anticipation of greater property and casualty losses. On the other hand, greater losses have helped support rising premiums, helping to bolster long-term profits. Moreover, rising yields in the bond market are helping insurance companies earn more income from their investments, helping bring loss ratios down and improve profits.

With the ability to monitor mileage, braking, speed, and time of day when a customer is driving, insurance giant Allstate (NYSE: ALL  ) added six more states to its telematics technology program that rewards drivers it deems safe with insurance discounts. There will now be 16 states in the program.

Top 5 Bank Stocks To Invest In 2014

Time Warner Cable said Friday that it has added Al Jazeera America to its channel lineup, broadening distribution for the fledgling news network that has had trouble gaining viewers.

The expansion gives Al Jazeera America, or AJAM as it's often called, access to about 55 million homes, it said.

Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Al Jazeera Media Network, funded by the government of Qatar, bought the struggling Current TV network earlier this year for about $500 million, gutted its programming and replaced it by launching AJAM in August. AJAM, its executives said, would compete with CNN and Fox News by focusing on "unbiased" news about the U.S.

But the change in ownership prompted cable companies, including Time Warner Cable and AT&T U-Verse, to drop the network, instantly weakening the audience reach that Al Jazeera had banked on at the time of its purchase of Current TV.

Best Railroad Companies To Own For 2014

WhenTransCanada (NYSE: TRP  ) first announced its plan to construct the Keystone XL pipeline, I'm sure company executives never thought it would wind up as one of the most polarizing environmental symbols in recent memory. Nor could they have predicted that the approval process would take, well, forever.

The exceedingly long duration of that process has allowed the Keystone XL to grow from a large pipeline to a larger than life feedstock for environmental, political, and economic arguments, and even a conspiracy theory or two. Some have really taken to the notion, for example, that Warren Buffett has a hand in delaying the pipeline project in order to boost his railroad business. The theory is that Buffett is encouraging President Obama into stalling on his decision to approve or deny Keystone XL. If the President does deny Keystone XL, the thinking goes, that is only further proof of Buffett's hold on him. Some of us may think this is a ridiculous theory, but given the power of money in Washington, let's take a closer look anyway.

Advisors' Opinion:

There's certainly no way of sugarcoating the fact that the recent jump in interest rates is going to further tighten the net interest margin of mortgage REITs like Annaly Capital Management and American Capital Agency (NASDAQ: AGNC  ) . As rates rise, Annaly and American Capital's borrowing costs will rise making it more difficult to turn sizable profits.

    Mortgage REITs begin their plunge
It didn't take long for investors to show their concern, and by mid-afternoon yesterday, Annaly Capital (NYSE: NLY  ) and fellow agency players American Capital Agency (NASDAQ: AGNC  ) and Armour Residential (NYSE: ARR  ) had dropped sharply after the opening bell. By the market's close, each fell by 0.69%, 0.87%, and 1.23%, sequentially.

Not surprisingly, both trusts saw their stock price rise yesterday, but so did American Capital Agency (NASDAQ: AGNC  ) and American Capital Mortgage (NASDAQ: MTGE  ) -- despite a dividend trim announcement from both companies. Both of the mREITs under CIO Gary Kain's supervision, which have been known for their high payouts, declared dividend cuts of 16% and 11%, consecutively. Top 5 Food Stocks To Invest In 2014

Ark Restaurants Corp (ARKR) owns and operates 19 restaurants and bars, 22 fast food concepts and catering operations in the USA. This is a short article outlining why they are an interesting company to put on the buy list. It needs to be said, this is not a chain that can roll out their concept or brand nationwide and enjoy terrific growth of their franchise. They chose not to build up brands and instead operate under trade names that suit the unique locations they prefer. The reason that I want to highlight this small company is that in recent years they have faced numerous challenges and adversity (aside from those posed by the general economy) and it's possible they have dealt with the majority, and free cash flow will enjoy a significant uptick in the next two years.

In 2011 the company faced non-recurring expenses in the amount of $500,000 recorded in the quarter ended December 31, 2011 related to the resignation of the Company's former President.

Sysco has avoided the margin compression suffered by chicken producers Tyson (NYSE: TSN  ) and Cal-Maine Foods (NASDAQ: CALM  ) and which was more deeply felt by smaller food-service operator Nash-Finch (NASDAQ: NAFC  ) . (It is omitted from this chart due to its drop into outright negative operating margin territory (a decline of roughly 250% in two years.) However, fellow food-service company United Natural Foods (NASDAQ: UNFI  ) has actually improved its margins, and restaurant chains both large and small (well, mid-size) have done an admirable job of holding the margin line in the face of rising input costs. So it appears that scale alone isn't enough to help Sysco outrun the rising costs of its products.

Campbell Soup (NYSE: CPB  ) was also cooling off the market, as its shares fell 6.2% after an unappetizing earnings report. The world's largest soup-maker badly missed estimates, reporting earnings per share of $0.63 against expectations of $0.86, while revenues fell 1.8% to $2.17 billion, missing the analysts' mark at $2.3 billion. Guidance was also below estimates. Campbell blamed a late Thanksgiving, marketing expenses, and a change in retailer buying patterns for the earnings shortfall, but broader food shopping patterns may also be at play, as fresh produce and organic packaged goods have gained favor with the population amid the rise of Whole Foods Market and other natural-foods grocers.

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Campbell Soup (CPB), the world's largest soup maker, cut its full-year sales forecast after posting weaker-than-expected quarterly sales as increased promotions failed to boost its U.S. soup division. Shares of Campbell, which also makes Prego pasta sauces and Pepperidge Farm cookies, fell 5.4 percent in premarket trading. The company said it expects sales from continuing operations to increase about 3 percent in fiscal 2014 ending July, compared with the previous forecast of a 4 to 5 percent rise. Campbell has been facing stiff competition from private-label brands and smaller rivals and has had trouble attracting younger, more health-conscious consumers to its canned soup products. The company launched eight new soups in January, including its first Latin-inspired cooking soups, and new varieties in its Healthy Request line. However, Campbell said Monday it was disappointed that its plans did not drive stronger soup sales in the third quarter ended April 27. "Despite an increase in the frequency of our promotional activity in the third quarter, we did not realize the anticipated lifts in a challenging consumer environment." Chief Executive Officer Denise Morrison said in a statement. Campbell didn't give a figure for U.S. soup sales for the quarter, but said sales "held steady" after growing 14 percent in the same quarter a year earlier. The company said it expects full-year adjusted earnings to be at the low end of its forecast of $2.53 to $2.58 a share. Analysts on average expect a profit of $2.53 a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Net income attributable to Campbell rose 1.7 percent to $184 million, or 58 cents a share, in the third quarter. Excluding items, the company earned 62 cents a share. 10 Best Retail Stocks To Buy Right Now

On this day in economic and business history...

The first official recognition of Mother's Day occurred nearly a century ago, when on May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May would thereafter be a time to celebrate all things motherly. Dreamed up years earlier, the holiday gained legitimacy after Anna Jarvis mounted a spirited campaign to gain recognition, first as an American holiday and ultimately a global event. Jarvis also helped originate the tradition of giving and wearing carnation flowers on Mother's Day, in honor of the mother she'd lost and hoped to commemorate.

Mother's Day has since grown into one of the most heavily commercialized holidays on the calendar, and this process was so rapid and pronounced that it turned Jarvis herself against her own holiday. In our time, the National Retail Federation estimates that nearly $19 billion will be spent each Mother's Day. Here's where most of that money goes:

$2.2 billion on flowers $1.6 billion on clothing and accessories $1.6 billion on electronics (give Mom a tablet this year) $3.4 billion on dining out $1.8 billion on gift cards $1.3 billion on personal services (spa treatments and the like)

Unfortunately, Hallmark is private, but United Online (NASDAQ: UNTD  ) , the owner of Florists' Transworld Delivery, might be your best bet for investing in the Mother's Day spending spree. If you really want to give Mom a gift that keeps on giving, look elsewhere -- with the right dividend stock, she'll be able to buy her own flowers each year, but shares of United Onlinehave fallen 20% in the last five years.

Arch Therapeutics, Inc. (Arch), formerly Almah, Inc., incorporated on September 16, 2009, operates as a life science company developing polymers containing peptides intended to form gel-like barriers over wounds to stop or control bleeding. Arch is a medical device company offering an approach to the rapid cessation of bleeding (hemostasis) and control of fluid leakage (sealant) during surgery and trauma care. Arch products are in preclinical development. The first product, AC5, is designed for hemostasis in minimally invasive (laparoscopic) and open surgical procedures.

AC5

AC5 is a synthetic peptide consisting of naturally occurring amino acids. When squirted or sprayed onto a wound, AC5 intercalates into the nooks and crannies of the connective tissue where it builds itself into a physical, mechanical structure. That structure provides a barrier to leaking substances, including blood and other bodily fluids, regardless of type of surgery or, based on early data, clotting ability.

When traders think of post-surgical wound management stocks, they may first think of names like Cytomedix, Inc. (OTCBB:CMXI) or Alliqua Inc. (OTCMKTS:ALQA). And well they should. Both companies have something of a history in the arena. ALQA is the purveyor of SilverSeal and Hydress antibiotic bandages, while CMXI is the developer of the AutoloGel system, which induces an affected patient's on body to do what it's supposed to do if there's a wound that won't heal. Cytomedix also makes the Angel platelet-rich plasma (PRP) delivery system. There's a relatively new name to add to the list of game-changing stocks in wound-management industry, however.... Arch Therapeutics Inc. (OTCBB:ARTH). The company is developing - well, has developed - a product called AC5 that nips post-surgical bleeding in the bud, largely negating the need for other post-surgical bleeding-control measures.

Nam Y. Huh/APCustomers ride escalators inside the Sears store in downtown Chicago. NEW YORK -- Sears Holdings (SHLD) is closing its downtown Chicago flagship outlet in April, the latest move by the retailer to cut the number of its stores as it relies more on online retailing. The store has lost "millions of dollars" since opening in 2001, a Sears spokesman said Tuesday. The closing will leave Sears' namesake chain without a store in the downtown core of its hometown. Sears is based in suburban Hoffman Estates, Ill. It has three other stores in Chicago. In a blog post Tuesday, hedge fund manager Edward Lampert, who is Sears' CEO and top shareholder, said store closings are necessary because shoppers' habits are changing as they buy more online. "The consensus about decreased store traffic also highlights another decision that has steered our work: we very often need less space to serve our members better and we may need fewer locations as well," Lampert said. "As difficult as these changes are, we believe the alternative of failing to plan for or even see where the retail industry is heading would be far, far worse." Sears reported a 9.2 percent decline in comparable sales for the holiday season at its namesake chain, the latest poor showing by the retailer. The company also operates the Kmart discount chain. Sears Holdings has closed about 300 U.S. stores since 2010. The company has about 2,000 Sears and Kmart locations in the United States. Other retailers are also closing stores. J.C. Penney (JCP) announced last week that it was closing 33 of its 1,100 stores. Macy's (M) is closing five stores, although it plans to open eight new locations. The news of the Chicago store closing was first reported by Crain's.
