Top Mid Cap Stocks For 2014

Are we witnessing the end of the biotech-stock boom? After coming within a hair of hitting a 52-week high on Friday, the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology Index ETF (IBB) looks set to drop for a third consecutive day, one that would shave some 9% off the ETF this week alone.

Associated Press

Is it time to panic? Not according to Bernstein Research’s Geoffrey Porges. He writes:

While this volatility was alarming for many investors, and reminds us of the traditionally high beta of our sector, there are several reasons why we do not expect this sell-off to mark the end of the near two-year rally in the group.

Why is he so confident? For starters the selling has been indiscriminate:

[The] sell-off in recent days was broad based and…affecting stocks in direct relationship to their volatility and expected duration of negative cash flow. Small and mid cap stocks were most affected (especially post-IPO stocks), and those with major uncertain events looming (MDVN) or with significant revenue upside already built into valuation (PCYC) were among the most severely affected. However, nothing changed in the environment to suggest that those events were any more or less likely to have positive outcomes yesterday, or to suggest that revenue potential was any more or less likely to be achieved than was previously expected.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

It's been a solid year for Thompson Reuters (TRI); since the calendar flipped over to January, this $30 billion financial media firm has rallied more than 22%. But don't worry if you've missed out on the move -- TRI looks well-positioned for higher levels thanks to the pattern that's been setting up in shares.

Thompson Reuters is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by horizontal resistance above shares at the $35.50 level and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as TRI bounces in between those two technically-important price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a confirmed breakout above that $35.50 price level. When the breakout happens, it's time to be a buyer.

TRI closed above the $35.50 level in yesterday's session, but it's a little early to call it a breakout just yet. If shares can hold above that breakout level all through today's session, then the buy signal is worth heeding.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Integrated Silicon Solution (Nasdaq: ISSI  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Integrated Silicon Solution doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, not so great. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 7.0%, and inventory increased 43.7%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks potentially problematic. Revenue grew 20.0%, and inventory grew 43.7%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks OK but not great. Revenue dropped 1.8%, and inventory dropped 0.8%.
