Hot Valued Companies To Own For 2014

Value investors tend to favor specific gauges to find bargains. Some like to seek out stocks trading below tangible book value, while others seek out stocks that sport low price-to-earnings (P/E) multiples or impressive free cash flow characteristics.

But why not focus on all three gauges?

I ran a screen to find stocks that press all the buttons, targeting only companies with a market value above $500 million and 2014 P/E multiples below 12. To preserve a nice margin of error for downside protection, I narrowed the list to stocks trading for less than 95% of tangible book value.

Here's what I found.

Of course, these numbers are just a starting point, and the seemingly least expensive stocks aren't always the top bargain. Case in point: Century Aluminum (Nasdaq: CENX), which holds a trove of undervalued assets parked on its balance sheet but is struggling to generate profits in an era of depressed aluminum prices.

We think KMB will be perceived as the safest of the multinationals. Its sales outside the US are about 55% of total; this compares to 65%-70% for Procter & Gamble (PG) and Coty (COTY) and 80%-90% for Colgate (CL), Avon and Tupperware (TUP). In general, its risk to the most volatile currencies is below average (its exposure to Eastern Europe is less than 2% of sales), though it is still translating results in Venezuela (about 3% of sales and profit) at the official rate of 6.3 VEF/$ (the parallel rate just hit 175 VEF/$) and Argentina (also 3% of sales) may devalue again. The cost of important raw materials has started to weaken; as they follow oil decline they could boost gross margins in 2H15. Of note, polypropylene and natural gas are off 17% 4Q-to-date; pulp prices, while not declining much, seem manageable.

The top exporters could have a great 2014 if the stars align properly. Deutsche Bank pointed out Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) and several other key winners for the theme of exporting from America in 2014. Investors have been disappointed, but its 2.9% dividend may entice holders to remain patient. Caterpillar has been among the worst Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) performers of 2013, and the consensus price target is about 10% higher than the price now.

The Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) is well known for giving income investors the dividend increases they like to see. All 30 Dow stocks pay dividends, and many of them consistently increase their quarterly payouts year after year. Interestingly, though, the timing of those dividend increases throughout the year reflects uneven patterns. After American Express (NYSE: AXP  ) and Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) pay out their recently declared higher dividends in the next couple of weeks, Dow investors could go quite a while without seeing another increase.

Still, there's only so long that the stock market can rise without the fundamentals of economic growth helping push it up further. So far, companies have done a great job becoming more efficient, cutting costs, and expanding profit margins. But Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) , and other companies that are most sensitive to economic growth have seen their share prices perform weakly so far this year, signaling concerns about the contribution that industrial activity will play in an eventual rebound.

Halliburton's share-price gains began early in the quarter after the company reported its first-quarter results. Although the company took a massive $637 million charge related to the 2010 Gulf disaster, Halliburton managed to hold its own on the domestic front in a weak environment. Internationally, the company cleaned up, with sales rising 21% and at more than twice that rate in the Eastern Hemisphere. But, perhaps most importantly, Halliburton looked favorably on the near-future for domestic drilling, noting gains in margins, and some pricing power expected to enhance profitability from rising well production. That's consistent with the results we saw from Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) this morning, as the industry leader beat earnings expectations with a nearly 50% jump in its net profits, coming largely from overseas activity, but also posting a 2% revenue increase in North America.

Sanctions that keep Western oil service firms — like Halliburton (HAL) and Schlumberger (SLB) from doing business in Iran remain firmly in place. That’s a huge issue because Iran needs their help in order to get oil flowing and keep it flowing. Like much of the Middle East, Iran is facing the problem of dwindling output from its legacy oil fields and needs some Western-style technology to keep pumping.

Schlumberger provides essential energy products and services to consumers and companies operating around the world. The stock has not see much movement in recent years but may be getting ready to head higher. Earnings and revenue figures have mostly been increasing but investors have grown to expect more from the company. Relative to its peers and sector, Schlumberger has been an average performer. WAIT AND SEE what Schlumberger stock does this coming quarter.
